Monument record: MCC9285 Gravel surface within precinct wall of Temple 2, St Helena School, Colchester (Element)Several patches of compacted gravel (L4, at least 50mm thick) , interpreted as part of a gravel surface within the temple precinct. The surface was defined during a watching brief of seven narrow drainage and electricity trenches (450mm wide x 600mm deep) with three manholes to link the new science and food technology building (immediately to the north) to existing infrastructure. These intermittent gravel patches were also recorded during the 2014 excavation of the new science and food technology building (CAT Report 825), where they were identified as part a gravel surface within the temple precinct.

Monument record: MCC2805 Roman Circus, Colchester (Monument)The remains of a Roman circus were discovered in 2004, during investigations in advance of the residential redevelopment of Colchester Garrison, c.400m south of the walled town. The circus was c.450m long x 75m wide and it consisted of a long, narrow U-shaped arena with evidence of eight starting-gates and a central archway at the square (west) end, and tiered seating-stands (Cavea) around the rest of the circuit. There were passageways through the seating-stands all round the circuit to provide access for the spectators (and there would have been a large archway in the curved end). A central barrier known as a spina ran down the centre, c.239m long.
