Medieval or earlier churchyard of St James's Church.

Remains of 10th-11th century church, within the NE part of the precinct of St John's Abbey and located to the N. of the site of the Abbey church (see MCC3067), defined during rescue excavations in 1972.

15th century house and inn.

Two conical brick kilns (one partially demolished), brick drying sheds and associated works; the site is still used as a brickworks.

Cropmarks: linear features, pits and a trackway, two ring ditches (one the site of a post-medieval windmill).

West wall of nave has the oldest fabric, but date unknown (Anglo-Saxon).

Mill, site of former water mill, which has become famous through the well known Constable painting and its C20 replacement

A trial-trenched evaluation and small excavation in 2015, in advance of a housing development, defined a small number of late prehistoric (ditches, pits and post-holes), which produced a small assemblage of handmade pottery (incl. three decorated sherds) dated to the Early Iron Age. The excavation also defined a probable Roman ditch (containing a 2nd century AD sherd).

17th century tenements (now demolished).

Medieval Moat, Lexden Lodge, defining a rectangular-shaped moated enclosure c.0.23ha in size, with entrance facing SE.
