A Parliamentary Report of 1777 records a parish workhouse in Great Horkesley for up to 26 inmates. Presumably, the residents would have been transferred to Lexden, Colchester, following the introduction of the 1834 Poor Act and the construction of the Lexden and Winstree Union Workhouse in 1836. The location of this workhouse is recorded on the 1st Edition 1:2500 map (1874-1887), as the 'Old Workhouse', today as 'Workhouse Cottage'.

Shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887) and as a Congragational Chapel on Epoch 2 (1897-1904) but not on Epoch 3 (1922-3). Possibly same building as MCC4320.

A nine-bay, single-storey, timber-framed and weather-boarded structure, aligned E to W and located on the east side of, and fronting, The Causeway. The building was recorded before demolition in 2019.
