Limited trial-trenched evaluation in 2004 on Stanway School playing field (now Woden Avenue) defined undated parallel ditches aligned NW-SE (also defined by aerial photography), probably defining a trackway, as well as an undated post-hole and a pit contained three abraded sherds of probable Late Iron Age (or possibly earlier Bronze Age pottery). No further investigation was undertaken in advance or during the housing development.

Cropmarks: two linear features and two small ring-ditches.

Colchester Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief during groundworks for infrastructure works for a row of town-houses (Tansley House) at the University of Essex’s new research park, the ‘Knowledge Gateway’ during 2012. The watching brief followed an evaluation by Essex CC Field Archaeology Unit in 2004 (ECC2845).

Earliest occupation on site dated to 12th- 13th Century extending to the 16th Century, during the 17th C the street frontage was built up .

Cropmarks: half of a sub-circular enclosure with two entrances in the southern course of its ditch, a small ring ditch with central `pit' within it and other ditches to the west in the same field.

During sand quarrying along the western side of Butt Road in the mid-19th century, part of an extensive late Roman inhumation cemetery was found.
